We, the members of the Alliance of Illinois Cemeterians, vow to honor our obligations to the families we serve and to the public at large. We diligently work to encourage the highest ethical practices in the operation, maintenance and management of Illinois cemeteries and by so doing to foster a greater respect for the death care profession. As AIC cemeterians we pledge to:
- show the utmost respect and dignity to the human remains entrusted to us for interment
- serve each family with respect, compassion and confidentiality, honoring their religious, ethnic
and personal beliefs
- have specific cemetery rules and regulations and to apply them fairly to all families served
- be aware of federal and state laws and regulations and to adhere to them and be able to
explain them to families in an understandable manner
- maintain and preserve all personal and historical records in a manner whereby they are
attainable by all subsequent generations
- maintain all interment sites and cemetery common grounds in a manner befitting this
hallowed place
- protect all preneed contracts and funds and assure that families understand the exact
stipulations of the contract and specifically what they are purchasing
- entrust all endowment or perpetual care funds as required by law to assure the continual
maintenance of the cemetery
- assist families as they memorialize the life lived by their loved one
- assist and educate fellow cemeterians and to promote the universal principles by which all
cemeteries should operate
- assure that no owner, manager or employee shall engage in any unprofessional conduct
while servicing families
- report any questionable activities or practices to the proper authorities
We offer this code of ethics as a standard to which all cemeteries should adhere.
